We do not condone any form of copyright infringement.

  • Works With: Netflix (US, Canada, Japan, and 14 Other Libraries)PIA excels at accessing a large number of Netflix libraries. My global team confirmed its ability to access local Netflix content from 17 different countries. For example, our tester in New York was able to stream “Bakugan” on US Netflix using PIA’s US East Streaming server without any interruptions. The regular US servers also performed reliably for accessing Netflix US.We verified that PIA’s streaming servers are effective for accessing Netflix in several other countries, including the UK, Canada, Japan, Denmark, Italy, Germany, and Sweden. While the regular servers in these locations also worked, the optimized servers provide a more reliable alternative, ensuring consistent access.
  • Works With: Disney+From my location in the UK, I was able to stream Disney+ UK without any issues. Similarly, my colleague in the US reported successful streaming of “Grown-ish” on Disney+ US using PIA’s US East Streaming Optimized server, with no buffering. PIA also enables secure access to Disney+ Hotstar from any location.
  • Works With: HuluAccessing Hulu with PIA was most consistent when using the optimized servers. Our US team experienced smooth streaming with minimal slowdowns and no buffering or interruptions when using the US West Streaming Optimized server. However, the regular servers, such as those in US New York City and US Massachusetts, were unable to access Hulu.
  • Works With: Amazon Prime VideoPIA’s streaming-optimized servers provide reliable access to Amazon Prime Video’s US library. Our US tester was able to watch “Lost in Oz” in high quality without any buffering. As with Hulu, regular servers did not consistently work with Amazon Prime Video. I was able to access my local library from the UK, but only after contacting customer support.
  • Also Works With: BBC iPlayer, (HBO) Max, ITV, Crunchyroll, Peacock, and YouTube TVAccessing BBC iPlayer was straightforward using PIA’s UK streaming server. Loading times were minimal, and I could watch “Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK vs the World” in the highest quality without lag. I also had no issues accessing ITV using the same server. Our testers in the US also reported no problems streaming Crunchyroll and Max using PIA’s US East and West Streaming Optimized servers. Some regular US servers also worked with these platforms. Streaming on Peacock TV and YouTube TV was equally seamless, with both streaming and regular servers providing access.
  • Doesn’t Work With: DAZN and Sky GoThe only platforms that my team and I could not access were DAZN and Sky Go. Despite trying various troubleshooting methods, including switching servers and using browsers instead of apps, we were unsuccessful. When I contacted PIA’s live chat support, the agent confirmed that PIA does not support access to DAZN or Sky Go, and there are no workarounds.

Speed — Great on Nearby Servers, but Slower At Long Distances (9.0/10)

PIA delivers impressive speeds, particularly when connected to nearby servers. Our dedicated speed tester observed some speed reduction on long-distance servers, but it was not significant enough to negatively impact browsing or streaming.

When evaluating PIA’s speeds, we consider three key metrics:

  • Download speed: The rate at which data is received from the server, measured in Mbps (megabits per second). This affects activities like streaming and web page loading.
  • Upload speed: The rate at which data is sent from your device, also measured in Mbps. This impacts file uploads, social media posting, and video uploads.
  • Ping: The time it takes for data to travel between the game server and your device, measured in milliseconds (ms). High ping can cause noticeable latency in online gaming.

Our dedicated speed expert conducts regular speed tests for PIA and other leading VPNs from a consistent US location. The table below presents the average speeds from multiple tests for each server, conducted using the same internet connection to ensure accurate comparisons.

Speed Test Results (Conducted from the USA):

Singapore173.46 Mbps207.30 Mbps172 ms142 Mbps115.86 Mbps173 ms

These results are generally excellent, aligning with the performance expected from a premium VPN like PIA. Given that it’s normal for a VPN to cause a speed reduction of around 20% on the nearest server, PIA’s performance is commendable. While speeds may decrease by nearly half on some long-distance servers, this is a typical trade-off due to the increased distance data must travel.

Gaming — Smooth Gameplay on Local Servers but More Lagging Over Long Distances (9.0/10)

PIA delivers speeds that are sufficient for smooth online gaming when connected to servers in close proximity. However, I did encounter increased lag when using long-distance connections.

To assess PIA’s gaming performance, I began by connecting to the optimal server for my location and then launched “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive” on Steam. The game loaded in under a minute, and I was able to play without any slowdowns or interruptions, with a ping of only 6 ms. Next, I connected to a server in France, and my ping increased only slightly to 19 ms.

PIA conveniently displays the ping rate for each of its servers, making it easy to select a fast connection for gaming.

I then tested a server in New York to evaluate performance over longer distances. The game took nearly 3 minutes to load, and I measured a ping of 79 ms. This is approaching the upper limit of acceptable latency, as a ping of 60 ms or lower is generally recommended to avoid noticeable delays. While the game was still playable, I did experience some lagging.

Connecting to a server on the West Coast resulted in an even more significant slowdown. Unfortunately, gaming became unplayable on servers located at very long distances, such as those in Japan and Australia.

Server Network — A Large Network With Great Coverage (9.8/10)

PIA boasts one of the most extensive server networks in the VPN industry. The company currently operates over 29,650 servers located in 91 countries across the globe. To support high bandwidth demands, PIA utilizes dedicated 10 Gbps internet lines.

Despite its large number of servers, PIA’s geographical coverage is not as broad as that of some competitors. For instance, both ExpressVPN and CyberGhost have fewer servers overall, but they provide access to a greater number of countries compared to PIA.

One notable advantage of PIA’s server network is its extensive coverage within the United States. PIA offers servers in every US state, a feature that is not commonly found among other VPN providers. This makes it an excellent choice for users who need to access US-based content in HD from anywhere in the world.

Virtual Server Locations

PIA employs virtual servers in approximately 80 of its server locations. These servers provide users with an IP address that corresponds to the selected country, but the physical server hardware is located elsewhere. With a total of 150 server locations, virtual servers comprise more than 50% of PIA’s server network. While this is not inherently problematic, some users may prefer VPN providers that do not utilize virtual servers.

Users have the option to disable virtual server locations within the app settings. This can be done by navigating to “Show Geo-located Regions” in the app settings and toggling the feature off.

One potential drawback of virtual server locations is the possibility of reduced speeds. Since the physical server may be located in a different country, the distance that data must travel can be greater than it appears, which may result in slower connection speeds.

However, virtual server locations also offer a significant advantage: they allow PIA to provide server locations in countries where it may be unsafe or impractical to operate physical servers. For example, PIA previously had physical servers in Brazil and Russia but removed them due to privacy concerns. Users can still connect to virtual server locations in these countries.

PIA provides a list of all its virtual servers and their corresponding physical server locations on its website, enhancing transparency.

PIA owns and operates all of its servers, eliminating concerns about third-party handling of user data. Many VPN providers rely on external companies to manage some or all of their server infrastructure. PIA’s server ownership demonstrates a commitment to data protection.

Dedicated IP Addresses

PIA offers dedicated, or static, IP addresses for an additional fee. A dedicated IP address is assigned exclusively to a single user, reducing the likelihood of detection and blocking by streaming platforms and other websites.

PIA provides dedicated IPs in several locations, including the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland, Belgium, and Sweden. Dedicated IPs are compatible only with PIA’s apps for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, and cannot be used on devices that do not natively support VPN connections.

RAM-Only Servers

PIA’s entire server network operates using RAM-only servers. This design enhances privacy, as RAM (volatile memory) does not retain data in the same way as traditional hard disk drives (HDDs). All data is automatically erased from RAM-based servers each time they are rebooted.

Private DNS Servers

PIA uses NextGen, colocated servers, meaning that it owns and operates its own private DNS servers. This ensures that DNS requests are handled directly by PIA, rather than by default DNS servers provided by internet service providers (ISPs). By keeping DNS requests within its own network, PIA enhances user privacy and prevents sensitive information about online activity from being exposed to third parties.

Using its own DNS servers can also improve connection speeds and reliability.

Security — Good, With Several Customization Options (9.6/10)

Private Internet Access provides a comprehensive suite of standard and advanced security features, aligning with the offerings of other premium VPN services.

These features include:

  • Military-grade encryption
  • A reliable kill switch
  • A powerful ad blocker (MACE)
  • A selection of security protocols

One of PIA’s distinguishing features is its support for user-selectable encryption levels, a level of customization not commonly found in other VPNs. PIA’s applications are also fully open-source, allowing for public scrutiny of the code for potential security vulnerabilities. PIA also provides robust protection against DNS and WebRTC leaks.

  • Solid Encryption: PIA employs military-grade AES-256 bit encryption, a highly robust standard that makes it extremely difficult for anyone to intercept and decipher user data. The default setting for the OpenVPN protocol is 128-bit encryption, but I strongly recommend that users increase this to 256-bit for maximum security. While this may result in a slight reduction in speed, the enhanced security is well worth the trade-off. The WireGuard protocol always uses 256-bit encryption.PIA no longer allows users to modify handshake settings or choose between different data authentication options. This change was implemented to improve compatibility and enhance the stability of the VPN connection. The VPN now defaults to the most secure settings (GCM ciphers and the RSA-4096 certificate) for both protocols. PIA also offers four remote ports for both TCP (8443, 853, 443, 80) and UDP (8080, 853, 123, 53), and allows users to specify a local port within the PIA client.
  • IP/DNS Leak Protection and Kill Switch: PIA provides comprehensive protection against DNS, WebRTC, and IP leaks. My testing, which involved over 10 different virtual and physical servers in locations such as the US, Germany, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, and Australia, confirmed that PIA effectively prevents any data leaks. My actual IP address remained consistently hidden throughout all tests.VPN leaks can expose sensitive information, such as your IP address, browsing history, and DNS requests, to your internet service provider (ISP) and other parties. PIA’s leak protection is enabled by default, which is a significant advantage, particularly for users who are new to VPNs.PIA’s kill switch is a crucial security feature that automatically blocks all internet traffic if the VPN connection is interrupted. This prevents accidental exposure of your real IP address and other sensitive data, significantly reducing the risk of data breaches.During my testing, I confirmed that the kill switch effectively blocked internet access whenever I switched servers. PIA’s kill switch is available on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS devices. In addition to the standard kill switch, PIA also offers an “Advanced Kill Switch” option, which blocks all internet traffic until a VPN connection is established.
  • Split Tunneling to Reroute Traffic: Split tunneling allows users to selectively route some of their internet traffic through the VPN tunnel while allowing other traffic to bypass the VPN and use their regular internet connection. This feature offers flexibility and can be useful in various scenarios. For example, I prefer to exclude my banking app from the VPN connection to avoid triggering security alerts or account блокировки.Split tunneling can also improve overall connection speeds by conserving bandwidth for data-intensive activities that require the VPN, while allowing other traffic to flow unrestricted.PIA’s split tunneling feature is available on Windows, Mac, and Linux. On Android devices, split tunneling is implemented as “Per App Settings,” allowing users to exclude specific apps (but not websites) from the VPN tunnel. Split tunneling is not currently supported on iOS devices.
  • Security Protocols — 3 Good Options: PIA supports OpenVPN and WireGuard, two of the most secure and widely used VPN protocols. These protocols are available on all of PIA’s desktop applications (Windows, Mac, and Linux) and its Android app. For iOS devices, PIA also offers IPSec (IKEv2). While this is a solid selection of protocols, PIA does not offer its own proprietary VPN protocol, unlike some competitors such as ExpressVPN and NordVPN.
    • WireGuard: This protocol is an excellent choice for data-intensive activities such as streaming and torrenting. In my speed tests, WireGuard consistently delivered the fastest speeds. It uses ChaCha20 authenticated encryption, a type of “stream” encryption that offers a good balance of speed and security.OpenVPN: OpenVPN has been a standard in the VPN industry for many years and is widely regarded as a highly secure protocol. While it may not offer the same level of speed as WireGuard, it is a reliable and well-tested option. OpenVPN supports both UDP (User Datagram Protocol) and TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and offers a range of encryption ciphers, up to AES-256-GCM. Its open-source nature allows for continuous scrutiny and improvement by the security community.IPSec (IKEv2): PIA offers IPSec on iOS devices. This is an older protocol that provides decent speeds, but it is generally considered to be less secure than OpenVPN or WireGuard. I would recommend using OpenVPN or WireGuard whenever possible.
PIA typically selects the most appropriate VPN protocol automatically, but users have the option to manually switch between protocols in the “Settings” menu, under “Protocols.”
  • Multi-Hop and Obfuscation: PIA’s Multi-Hop feature enhances security by routing user traffic through two servers: a SOCKS5 or Shadowsocks proxy server, followed by a VPN server. This adds an extra layer of indirection and makes it more difficult for anyone to trace online activity back to the user. I found this feature to be even more effective than traditional double VPN servers, as it provides comparable security benefits with less of an impact on connection speeds.
  • MACE Ad Blocker — Effective At Blocking Malicious Ads, But Not Paid Ads: PIA includes a built-in ad blocker called MACE, which primarily focuses on blocking malicious advertisements. According to PIA’s customer support, MACE is designed to block ads that contain malicious content, rather than all advertisements. In my testing, MACE proved to be quite effective at blocking malicious ads. When I visited ad-heavy websites such as Forbes and the Daily Mail, MACE blocked nearly all ads, with only one ad getting through on each site. However, MACE does not block all ads, including those on YouTube videos. It also lacks options to exclude specific domains from ad blocking or to customize its behavior. MACE can only be toggled on or off.
  • Additional Security: Identity Guard and Antivirus: PIA provides an Identity Guard feature that allows users to check if their email address has been exposed in any data breaches. This feature is accessible through the “Client Support Panel,” under the “Identity Guard” tab. Identity Guard regularly scans for your email address and can be configured to send email alerts if it is compromised.PIA also offers a private mobile browser called InBrowser, which automatically deletes browsing activity, cookies, and history when the app is closed. InBrowser is available as a free download for both iOS and Android devices. For an additional fee, PIA offers an Antivirus add-on. This antivirus solution is designed to detect and remove malware without tracking user activity or logging data, emphasizing user privacy and control over their digital information. The Antivirus add-on can be added to your PIA subscription for $5 and is accessible using your existing VPN account credentials.PIA Antivirus includes features such as:
    • A dashboard for real-time protection status
    • A prevention engine to defend against zero-day threats
    • A web shield to block access to malicious websites and downloads
    • Various scanning options (quick, complete, custom, and scheduled)
    • The ability to “quarantine” suspicious or malicious files
    • Detailed security reports
    • Customizable settings for notifications, security, and privacy

Editor’s Note: Private Internet Access and this site are in the same ownership group.

Privacy — A Proven No-Logs Policy, but It’s Located in the US (9.8/10)

PIA is a strong choice for privacy-conscious users, thanks to its strict no-logs policy and the robust security features it offers. However, it’s important to note that PIA is based in the United States, which is not considered the most privacy-friendly jurisdiction. Despite this, PIA has consistently demonstrated its commitment to user privacy, and its no-logs policy has been repeatedly verified.

  • Does Private Internet Access Keep Logs? No Private Internet Access maintains a strict no-logs policy, ensuring that no identifiable information about your online activities is stored. The only data that PIA retains is your email address, payment information, state and zip code (for taxation purposes), and anonymized data that is used to improve the service. PIA also supports cryptocurrency payments for users who wish to enhance their anonymity. The company explicitly states that it will never rent or sell customer information.PIA collects only the minimal amount of data necessary to manage user accounts and comply with tax regulations.PIA’s no-logs policy has been tested and verified in court on multiple occasions. In 2016, the FBI requested user information from PIA, but the company was unable to provide any data about the user’s activities because none was stored. The Russian government also seized PIA servers in 2016 but found no identifiable user data. Following this incident, PIA removed all of its servers from Russia. In 2018, PIA’s policy was once again validated when the US government requested user data, andPIA had nothing to share.
  • Was PIA VPN Audited? Yes In June 2022, PIA’s no-logs policy underwent an independent audit by Deloitte, one of the “Big Four” auditing firms. The audit confirmed that PIA’s server configurations align with its stated privacy policies, that the company does not store any logs, and that it cannot identify users or track their online activities. This audit provides further assurance that PIA does not keep any records of your online behavior on its servers.PIA’s network architecture is also designed to prevent data retention. The service operates exclusively on RAM-only servers. These servers use volatile memory (RAM) instead of traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), and they are automatically wiped clean each time they are rebooted. This ensures that all user data is erased regularly and cannot be recovered or shared.
  • Based in the US Private Internet Access is headquartered in the United States, which is a member of the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliance. This is an international agreement among governments to share surveillance information.Despite being based in the US, Private Internet Access adheres to a strong no-logs policy that has been consistently audited and verified. The company has operated for over a decade without storing or sharing any identifiable user information, demonstrating its commitment to data protection.PIA also supports non-profit organizations that advocate for internet freedom, such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Creative Commons.
  • Does Private Internet Access Work in China? Maybe, but It’s Not Guaranteed PIA states that its service may be usable in China, but users are advised to download the app to their devices before arriving in the country. Customer support acknowledges that PIA’s reliability in China is not guaranteed and that some troubleshooting may be required. This is a common challenge for VPN providers, as even the best VPNs for China do not always maintain 100% uptime due to the country’s sophisticated internet censorship.PIA is one of the few VPNs that offers virtual servers in China. These servers provide users with a Chinese IP address but are not physically located in China, enhancing user privacy. However, connections to these servers may result in increased latency (my ping reached 278 ms) and reduced speeds (a decrease of nearly 80% in my testing). The Chinese government permits only state-approved VPNs and actively blocks other VPN services. While there have been no publicly reported cases of tourists being penalized for using VPNs in China, it is crucial to be aware of the local laws and regulations regarding VPN use and any potential risks.PIA’s customer support has indicated that the service may also be accessible in other countries with restrictive internet policies, such as Iran, the UAE, Russia, and Turkey. However, as with China, PIA cannot guarantee consistent functionality in these locations.

Torrenting — Download on Any Server With Fast Speeds (9.6/10)

PIA is a torrent-friendly VPN that allows peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing on all of its servers. This eliminates the need to search for specific P2P-optimized servers, simplifying the torrenting process.

To evaluate PIA’s torrenting performance, I connected to a UK server and downloaded a copyleft movie, “The Last Man on Earth,” using uTorrent. The 1.23 GB file downloaded in under 2 minutes, which is comparable to the speeds I typically experience without a VPN connection.

I then used a US server to download another copyleft file, “The Chase” (900 MB). This download completed in just over a minute.

PIA also offers a port forwarding feature, which can further improve torrenting speeds by increasing the number of seeders and allowing for faster downloads. However, port forwarding is not available on US servers, which is a limitation.

PIA also supports the use of a SOCKS5 proxy for torrenting, but I do not recommend this option. PIA’s proxies function as a double-hop connection, routing traffic through the proxy server before the VPN tunnel. This configuration significantly reduces download speeds (in my testing, speeds were reduced by 91%).

Overall, I am impressed with PIA’s torrenting capabilities. The service provides fast download speeds, robust security features, including military-grade encryption, a strict no-logs policy, and strong leak protection. This combination ensures that users can torrent safely and securely, without compromising their privacy or exposing their personal data.

Disclaimer: We do not condone any illegal activities. Downloading copyrighted material is prohibited in most countries. Users are responsible for complying with all applicable laws and regulations regarding torrenting.

Installation & Apps (9.6/10)

PIA provides a user-friendly experience with its applications, catering to both novice and advanced users.

The apps are designed to be straightforward, allowing users to connect to a VPN server with a single click. After installing the application on your device, you can quickly establish a connection by clicking the large power button on the main interface.

For users who prefer more control over their server selection, PIA offers an interactive map that displays the full list of available servers. You can also use the search box to find specific servers or browse by location.

PIA also allows users to “favorite” specific servers by clicking the heart icon next to them. This feature provides quick access to frequently used servers, streamlining the connection process. The server list also displays the latency (ping) for each server, enabling users to choose the fastest available option for their location.

PIA’s “Settings” menu provides a wide range of customization options, which may initially seem overwhelming, particularly for users who are new to VPNs. These options include:

  • Connection automation rules
  • Different VPN protocols and encryption levels
  • Various DNS settings

However, it’s important to note that these settings are optional and are primarily intended for users who wish to fine-tune their VPN configuration. PIA’s most important security features are pre-configured and enabled by default, providing robust protection without requiring any manual adjustments. Once users become familiar with the app’s interface, these customizable settings enhance its versatility and make it a powerful tool.

  • Setup & Installation: Setting up PIA on my devices was a quick and easy process. I downloaded the Windows application from the official PIA website and completed the installation in just a few minutes. After logging in with my account credentials, I was able to start using the VPN immediately. The installation process was equally straightforward on my iPhone and Android tablet. I downloaded the apps from the official website, waited for the installation to finish, and then logged in. PIA also offers a dedicated Linux application, making installation on Linux-based systems just as simple.

Quick Guide: How to Download PIA in 3 Easy Steps
